Paver Patios Built for Switzerland Yards
Helm Outdoor Solutions designs and installs paver patios throughout Switzerland, the rural stretch of northwest St. Johns County along SR-13 where lots are measured in acres and houses sit well back from the road. Every patio is planned around furniture, circulation and access, then excavated, compacted in stages and graded so water moves away from the house.
A patio should connect the home to the yard, not sit between them
The best patio layouts begin with the doors from the house, the furniture the space needs to hold and the routes people will use to move between cooking, dining, seating and the yard.
Helm uses those conditions, along with shade, grade and drainage, to shape the footprint before selecting the material, pattern and border.
The patio is planned before the pattern is selected
Helm works through the decisions that determine comfort, movement and long-term performance.
Use & furniture
On acreage the patio location is a real choice rather than a given, so the layout starts with which piece of ground works for sun, sightlines and a sensible walk from the back door.
Elevation & water
Well and septic locations decide where you can excavate. Both systems sit on the property out here, and their footprint needs establishing before a shape gets drawn.
Material & pattern
Material and pattern are chosen to suit the house, which along this part of SR-13 can be a 1970s brick ranch or current construction on the same road.
Base & installation
Base depth comes from the soil on your lot, and on a long private drive the route for a machine and a pallet delivery gets confirmed first.

Paver Patios Across Switzerland and the Rural SR-13 Corridor
Helm Outdoor Solutions works throughout Switzerland and the rural northwest corner of St. Johns County, including the acreage properties along SR-13 and the side roads running off it toward the St. Johns River, as well as Fruit Cove, St. Johns and the wider county.
Building a paver patio in Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the few parts of northwest St. Johns County that still looks the way the whole area used to look. Properties are large, the road is SR-13 rather than a subdivision loop, and the house usually sits a long way back from it. That changes the first question on a patio job. Instead of asking how to fit a patio into a small rectangle of yard, the question becomes which part of a large yard you should be building on at all.
The answer is usually decided by two things you cannot move. Homes out here run on private well and septic rather than county utilities, and both of those systems occupy ground. A septic tank, its drainfield and the reserve area held for a future drainfield all need to stay clear of a permanent surface, because a patio over a drainfield makes the system harder to service and can compromise it outright. A well has its own separation requirements from anything that disturbs the ground around it. Where those components sit is worth establishing from your records before a footprint is fixed, rather than guessed from wherever a cleanout cap happens to be visible.
Access is the second condition, and on acreage it is a distance problem more than a width problem. Base rock and pavers arrive by truck, and a long drive with a soft or unpaved surface may not take a loaded delivery vehicle at all, which means material gets dropped where the truck can safely sit and moved to the work area in stages. That is normal out here and entirely workable, but it belongs in the price and the schedule from the start.
Two smaller notes. Rural ground has not been mass-graded and filled the way a planned community has, so soil can change noticeably between one side of a yard and the other, and base depth is decided at the property rather than carried over from another job. And St. Johns County regulates the removal of protected trees, with categories and thresholds that vary, so check your specific tree before planning a footprint around it. Tree, setback and permitting questions go to St. Johns County Growth Management.

Questions about paver patios in Switzerland
There is no flat square-foot price. On acreage the variables are different from a subdivision lot: the distance material has to travel from the road, whether a delivery truck can reach the work area, and a footprint that has to sit clear of the well and septic components. Size and material do the rest. Helm walks the property and gives a written, site-specific price before work is scheduled.
No, and that is worth settling before you commit to a location. A drainfield needs air and needs to stay accessible, and a permanent surface over it makes servicing or replacing the system difficult. The reserve area held for a future drainfield matters for the same reason. Locating those components first is a great deal cheaper than finding them partway through an excavation.
Not as close as most people expect, and the separation is set by rule rather than by preference, so it needs checking for your property rather than estimating. The practical points are that a wellhead has to stay accessible for service, and that the ground and lines around it should not be disturbed or built over. Establishing where the well and its supply line run is part of settling the footprint.
No, it changes the method. A loaded delivery truck may not be able to use a soft or unpaved drive, in which case material comes off where the truck can sit safely and moves to the work area in stages. That is slower, and it belongs in the quote and the schedule rather than turning up as a surprise. Access gets confirmed before pricing.
It depends on what you are building and where it sits. A ground-level patio is treated differently from a structure or a wall, and setbacks, easements and proximity to a well or septic component can all bring the county into it. Because that varies by parcel, confirm your own situation with St. Johns County Growth Management rather than relying on what a neighbor did.
Often, yes. Rural lots have not been mass-graded and filled the way a planned community has, so what is under the yard is closer to original ground and can change across short distances. That is not worse, it is less uniform, which is why base depth is decided at your property. Pavers also tolerate ground movement better than a poured slab, since the surface is made of individual units.
About three to seven working days on site for most residential patios, with excavation and base preparation taking the largest share. Acreage adds time for moving material the length of the drive, and more if the footprint has to be reworked once the well and septic locations are confirmed. You get a schedule with your proposal.
Sweeping and the occasional rinse, plus topping up polymeric joint sand every few years. Out here the difference is what lands on the surface. Open acreage means more sun and wind-blown grit, and mowing a large yard throws clippings and sand across a patio, so a blower earns its keep more than a pressure washer does. If a section settles, those units lift, the base is corrected and the same pavers reset.
